Virtualization helpful but no cure-all for data center energy crunch

Virtualization gave data center managers some breathing room in their battle against rising energy use, but more changes are needed to keep pace with the demands of IT departments, speakers at an industry conference said Friday. Those changes include tighter integration between IT equipment and building management systems — so that temperature readings from servers can be used to directly control cooling systems, for example — and better communication between IT staff and the facilities teams that run the data center. Secretary Chu Announces up to $62 Million for Concentrating Solar Power Research and Development

Investment will speed the commercialization and deployment of cutting-edge solar technologies Washington, DC – U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced the selections of projects for investment of up to $62 million over five years to research, develop, and demonstrate Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) systems capable of providing low-cost electrical power.  This funding will support improvements in CSP systems, components, and thermal energy storage to accelerate the market-readiness of this renewable energy technology.
